This course explores next-generation chemical pollution decontamination solutions, specifically designed to address the technical and economic limitations of conventional wastewater treatment. It covers an array of advanced remediation technologies aimed at protecting the Mediterranean ecosystem, including microfluidic advanced oxidation, chemical-free pulsed discharge plasma systems, and selective element recovery. Furthermore, the course examines sustainable circular economy practices in water engineering, focusing on the experimental conversion of End-of-Life (EoL) Reverse Osmosis (RO) membranes into functional Nanofiltration (NF) and Ultrafiltration (UF) elements.

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Identify the primary technical and economic limitations of traditional wastewater treatment systems, including energy costs and regulatory compliance.
  • Explain the underlying operational principles of advanced remediation solutions, including microfluidics, pulsed discharge plasma, and selective scavenging technologies.
  • Analyze the experimental process of converting End-of-Life (EoL) Reverse Osmosis membranes into functional Nanofiltration (NF) or Ultrafiltration (UF) modules.
  • Evaluate the hydraulic and chemical performance of recycled membranes using key operational metrics such as permeate flow, rejection rate, and conversion rate under varying pressure conditions.
  • Assess the efficiency of sequential cleaning and chemical modification protocols applied to membrane layers to maximize the removal of target pharmaceutical pollutants like IBU, KET, and DIC.
