As the 36-month iMERMAID project approaches its final stages, this course delivers key findings and policy recommendations for the remediation and decontamination of chemical pollution in the Mediterranean ecosystem. Focused on a strict “source-to-sea” approach, the course explores the integration of advanced monitoring technologies within the EU Policy framework, specifically aligning with the EU Water Resilience Strategy (WRS) and the upcoming Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) revision.
By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
- Analyze the core pillars of the EU Water Resilience Strategy and its direct connection to the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) revision.
- Evaluate the main approaches and flagship actions required for restoring the water cycle, building a water-smart society, and ensuring clean, affordable water for all.
- Identify the 11 qualitative descriptors of Good Environmental Status (GES) and summarize the critical implementation gaps identified in recent MSFD evaluations.
- Assess the policy enhancements and holistic regulations proposed in the first iMERMAID Policy Brief regarding Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CoECs).
- Understand how to integrate electrochemical, real-time, in situ sensors and modular remediation units into national wastewater monitoring plans under the UWWTD guidelines.
- Formulate strategies to update MSFD descriptors to incorporate bioaccumulation metrics, sediment-bound pollutants, and transboundary regional innovation.
